He was born May 29, 1928, in Garden City, to Henry R. and Nellie S. Tope Coates, and grew up in Garden City.
In 1950, Mr. Coates enlisted in the U.S. Army. After returning to Kansas, he lived in Hutchinson for five years before moving back to Garden City. While living in Garden City, he worked for P.L. Dale Construction and in maintenance for St. Catherine Hospital for 25 years and went on to retire from the City of Garden City. He enjoyed wood working, fishing and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Graveside service was at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Garden City.
