Robert Burrows was born in Lancashire, England, son of John, a tenant farmer and Mary, a weaver. Apprenticed as a weaver in the throes of the Industrial Revolution, Robert married Hannah Oldham, the mother of all of his children who survived to adulthood. In 1853 son Alfred was born in England. In 1855, Robert emigrated to America to escape the then oppressive conditions of textile workers in England. His wife Hannah and son Alfred soon followed. In the US Robert worked as a hired farm hand in Illinois where children Arthur William and Alice were born, and in Iowa, where wife Hannah died after giving birth to their forth child, who was given her mother's name. Robert and son Alfred homesteaded in Elk County KS before 1875. Robert would marry three more times in his long life, first to Rachel, who helped raise his children and died 1898, then to widow Mary A. who died before 1905, and finally c. 1905 to widow Mary E.

Son Arthur William Burrows, b. 1858 or 59, died in Logan County Oklahoma after 1920 but his grave has not been found. He eloped to Arkansas to marry 14 year old neighbor Drusilla Smith in 1879 and had a number of children, several not surviving to adulthood.
