Fred H. Schaefer, 35 S. 11th St. Hilbert, age 87, died Thursday, Sept. 8, at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Appleton after a short illness.

He was born March 28, 1901, at Orlando, OK, the son of the late Jacob and Louisa (Raddatz) Schaefer. He had attended Trinity Lutheran School in Brillion. He married Margaret Thurow on Nov. 27, 1924, at Peace United Church of Christ in Brillion. The couple had celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 1984. Schaefer and his family had farmed in the Town of Chilton for 41 years, moving into Hilbert in 1965 after his retirement.

He was a member of St. Luke Lutheran Church in the town of Chilton, the Hilbert Senior Citizens, and he and his wife were involved in senior citizen bowling. He also enjoyed the outdoors and working with his hands.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret; one granddaughter and her husband, Judy and LeRoy Braun, Brillion; one grandson and his wife, Daniel and Linda Loewe, Hilbert; four great-grandchildren, Tracy Braun, Maria, Valerie, and James Loewe; a sister and brother-in-law, Adeline and Milton Nitschke, Fond Du Lac; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert and Beatrice Behnke, and Milton and Ruth Behnke, all of Brillion; a step sister-in-law, Esther Behnke, Brillion; two half sisters-in-law, Edna Behnke, Brillion, and Lavida Behnke, Reedsville.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter Gloria, four sisters and seven brothers.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11, 1988 at St. Luke Lutheran Church in the Town of Chilton, the Rev. Theodore Bartell officiating. Burial was in the Brillion Community Cemetery.

The Sansom Funeral Home in Hilbert assisted the family with arrangements.
