Maria was born in Ribeira das Taínhas, on the island of São Miguel, in the Azores to José Furtado Fontes and Maria do Rosario. At the age of 24, she married Manuel Correia in Ribeira das Taínhas. Two years later, they immigrated to America (the area called Riverpoint in West Warwick, Rhode Island) where they had possibly 7 children, 5 of whom lived to adulthood.
