He married Mary Catherine Ridley on 31 August 1858, in Lafayette Township, Clinton, Missouri, United States. They were the parents of at least 3 sons and 4 daughters. He lived in Indianola, Warren, Iowa, United States in 1900 and Washington Township, Warren, Iowa, United States in 1910. He died on 6 August 1913, in Japan, at the age of 82, and was buried in Indianola, Warren, Iowa, United States.
