William Allen "Bill" Mayfield, 92, of Jacksonville, died Sunday, Aug. 24, 2008, at the Barton W. Stone Home in Jacksonville. He was born Sept. 5, 1915, in Kansas City, Mo., the son of William Madison and Jennie Rebecca Allen Mayfield. He married Jeroldine M. "Jerry" Marquart on Aug. 25, 1946, in Chicago, and she preceded him in death April 13, 2005.

He is survived by a daughter, Katherine S. Mayfield of Lake Pleasant, Mass.; a son, Thomas E. Mayfield of Lakewood, Calif.; and two grandchildren, Heather Mayfield of St. Louis, and Aaron Mayfield of Lakewood, Calif.

Mr. Mayfield was a 1938 graduate of Kansas State Agriculture College with a degree in electrical engineering. He served with the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1945. He resided many years in the St. Louis area where he was an electrical engineer with Sverdrup and Parcel of St. Louis, assisting in the construction of the Arch and the former Busch Stadium. He was a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. While residing in the St. Louis area, he was a member of the Webster Groves Christian Church. After relocating to Jacksonville, he was a member of Central Christian Church and an active volunteer at the Barton W. Stone Home, where he enjoyed delivering mail and newspapers to the residents.

Services were entrusted to Buchanan and Cody Funeral Home of Jacksonville, Illinois.
