Private First Class Clements served three years in the U.S. Army, going overseas with the 165th Infantry Regiment on more than one occasion. On his last trip to the Pacific Theatre, the 165th Infantry left Hawaii on May 31, 1944 and landed on Saipan on June 17, 1944. They immediately attacked Saipan's airstrip and after a day of brutal fighting captured the airfield. On September 4, the 165th Infantry moved to Espiritu Santo, but it was apparently without Private First Class Clements who had been hospitalized with appendicitis in late August. Private Clements died on October 25, 1944 at Saipan, apparently of complications from an appendectomy, according to his hopital record. His remains were returned home from Saipan in May 1948 aboard the U.S. Army Transport Albert M. Boe, along with those of 36 other Alabamians originally buried in military cemeteries at Iwo Jima, Saipan, Guam and Tinian.
