Nathaniel Anderson Crum was the son of Anderson Pigg Crum and Lititia Akers, natives of Patrick County, Virginia. He was the brother of William Henry Clay Crum, James Wesley Crum, a sister (d.y.), George Washington Crum, Amanda (Crum) Akers, Mary Elizabeth (Crum) Howard and a brother (d.y.), all born and raised in Moniteau County on the family farm.

Nathaniel married 1/ Eliza Jane Durham, the daughter of James Durham and Mary Wade, March 20, 1864 in Cole County, Missouri. Nathaniel and Eliza were the parents of Frank J Crum, Octavia Bell Crum (d.y.), Robert Lee Crum, Benjamin Franklin Crum, Anderson Levi Crum and Joseph Alfred Crum.

Eliza Jane died in 1879 and Nathaniel married 2/ Rhoda Carlton Cram, the daughter of Peter Cram and Rebecca Carlton, natives of New Hampshire. Nathaniel and Rhoda were married April 21, 1885 in Moniteau County. They had one child, William Nathaniel Crum "Little Billy", born in 1891 and died 1904. Nathaniel Anderson Crum served in the Confederacy during the Civil War and was in the Battle of Pea Ridge. He was a lifetime farmer in Moniteau County.
