Catherine 'Kitty' SIMPSON, 1793-1831, was the fourth child of Colonel John SIMPSON, and of his wife, Mary WELLS.

General John King GRIFFIN, born near Clinton, Laurens County, South Carolina, August 13, 1789, died August 1, 1841, Kinards, Laurens County, South Carolina, buried Old Little River Dominick Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Kinards, Laurens County, South Carolina.

General John King GRIFFIN, 1789-1841, was son of Charles GRIFFIN, 1763-1820, and of his wife, Mary KING, 1763-1823, and grandson of American Revolutionary War Veteran Private James GRIFFIN, 1731-1781, and of his wife, Frances 'Fanny' Beale [variant spelling: BEALE, BEALLE], 1730-1799.

For 16 years, General John King GRIFFIN, 1789-1841, repesented Laurens County in the state Legislature, a part of the time in the House and part in the Senate; and for five terms, from 1831 to 1841, was a member of the Congress of the United States. He acquired considerable prominence as a politician and was perhaps one of the most popular men of his time.

GRIFFIN, John King, a Representative from South Carolina; born near Clinton, Laurens County, S.C., August 13, 1789; son of Charles Bluford GRIFFIN, 1762-1820, and of his wife, Mary KING, 1763-1823; grandson of American Revolutionary Veteran James GRIFFIN, 1730-1782, died at the Fall of Charleston, and of his wife, American Revolutionary War Veteran Frances ‘Fanny' BEALE, 1730-1799, (South Carolina Women of the American Revolution) daughter of Captain William Beal served as a Continental Soldier in the 3rd regiment commanded by Colonel William Thomson; married 17 May 1809, Catherine ‘Kitty' SIMPSON, 1793-1831, daughter of American Revolutionary War Veteran Colonel John SIMPSON, 1751-1815, and of his wife, Mary WELLS, 1754-1810; pursued an academic course; engaged as a planter; served in the State house of representatives 1816-1819; member of the State senate 1820-1824 and again in 1828; elected as a Nullifier to the Twenty-second through Twenty-fifth Congresses and reelected as a Democrat to the Twenty-sixth Congress (March 4, 1831-March 3, 1841); died near Clinton, S.C., August 1, 1841; interment in Old Little River Dominick Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Kinards, Laurens County, S.C.'

When Catherine 'Kitty' SIMPSON died, General John King GRIFFIN married second the widow of Robert DUNLAP, who was the daughter of Drayton NANCE of Newberry, Newberry District, South Carolina. Shortly after his second marriage, U.S. Congress General John King Griffin died, and General William WALLACE, succeeded him in Congress, and married his widow.

Gen. John K. Griffin and Catherine Simpson Griffin, his first wife, had ten (10) known children, as follows:

Dr. Charles Fincher GARY was a practicing physician in Laurens, and later, in Belfast, Laurens County, South Carolina; eight (8) children are known of this marriage.

5. Charles Bluford GRIFFIN, b. Feb. 1816; md. 8 Oct 1835, Elizabeth GARY; md. 2nd Dec 1846, Mrs. Rebecca Pitts HILL, daughter of Edward PITTS. Charles Bluford GRIFFIN was elected to the Legislature in 1839, and served two terms, and in 1843 was elected General, 5th Regiment, S.C., Cavalry, and was known as General Bluford Griffin. There are no known children born of either marriage.

6. Andrew Jackson Griffin, b. 1817, md. 03 Dec 1835, Cornelia Adeline SANDERS, daughter of Rev. B. McC. SANDERS, President of Mercer College, Georgia, where he and and his brother, Charles Bluford GRIFFIN, attended College. About 1858, A. J. Griffin moved with his family to Washita, Ari., where he has since died; nine (9) children are known of this marriage.

John Franklin GRIFFIN, b. 27 Nov. 1819; md. 12 Nov. 1839, Margaret Smith DUNLAP, daughter of American Revolutionary War Veteran Major William DUNLAP, 1765-1838, and of his wife, Margaret HUNTER, 1776-1851, (she is buried Dunlap Family Cemetery, Clinton, Laurens County, South Carolina, Find-A-Grave Memorial # 49864408) daughter of Judge John HUNTER. 9. Richard Simpson Griffin, b. 03 Nov 1822, md. 1st 17 Feb 1852, the widow of his deceased brother, John Franklin GRIFFIN, formerly Margaret S. DUNLAP. To this marriage, seven (7) children are known. After the death of Margaret S. DUNLAP GRIFFIN, 23 Sept. 1865, Richard S. GRIFFIN md. 2nd 03 Apr 1857, Mrs. Emma F. GARY, widow of Duff F. GARY, who was his nephew.

10. Nancy Catherine Griffin, b. 25 Mar 1824, md. 28 Sept 1842, Rev. Thomas J. PEARCE, a Baptist minister from Darlington, South Carolina. About 1858, Mr. PEARCE removed with his family to Arkansas, then to Texas in 1864, where he died Oct. 1865; five (5) children are known of this marriage.
