U.S. Congressman, U.S. Senator. He completed preparatory studies and engaged in agricultural pursuits in Newberry, South Carolina. Entering politics, he was a member of the South Carolina State House of Representatives (1786-92) and a Federalist presidential elector, in 1792. In 1793, he was elected to the Third Congress, serving until 1795 and elected as a Democratic Republican to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Pierce Butler in 1796 and served until he resigned in 1798. After leaving the Senate, he resumed agricultural pursuits on his plantation until his death.
