United States Supreme Court Associate Justice, US Congressman. He graduated from Princeton University in 1879, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1882 and proceeded to practice law in Dover, New Jersey. In 1895, he was elected as a Republican to the Fifty-fourth and Fifty-fifth Congresses and served until 1899, when he resigned to be a member of the New Jersey State Senate, serving from 1899 to 1901. He was an associate justice of the supreme court of New Jersey, (1901 to 1908) and chancellor of New Jersey, (1908 to 1912). In 1912, President William H. Taft appointed Pitney to the Supreme Court of the United States and served ten years until he retired from the bench in 1922.
