Children were born in Watertown SD. He invested in real estate and in sheep in Watertown SD. It is said that he built the first frame house in Watertown, and a native Indian walked through it to peacefully inspect it, when his wife was home alone with children. Eugene was in partnership with a Mr. Wood in the real estate and loan business. As far west as Pierre, SD, he speculated land. In one newspaper reference of him, he is referred to as one of the leading lawyers of Watertown. He returned to Brooklyn sometime before 1895 as the Brooklyn City directory has him owning a house at 11 Cooper. He worked in the coal and ice business there.
