Mr. Shafer was born Oct. 17, 1930, in Hugo, Okla., to Cleo and Anabel Shafer. He was raised by his aunt, Vivian Marshall, and grandmother, Lucretia Marshall. He grew up in Hugo, Okla., graduated from high school and then joined the military and served 21 years, retiring in 1968. He taught ROTC and then he was a businessman in Fort Worth. He recently moved to Lake Whitney.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Cathy Shafer Moore, and two grandchildren, Amy and April Anthony.
Survivors: Wife, Elaine Shafer; sons, Chris Shafer and wife, Lesli, and Scott Shafer and wife, Pam; daughter, Karen Shafer; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
