GEORGE SPRAGUE SERVICES TODAY

George A. Sprague, 91, former Dallas mayor, city councilman, football enthusiast, and active churchman, was to be buried in Oak Cliff Cemetery Saturday.

The Rev. Edward Bayless was to conduct the funeral services at 1:30 p.m. in the Oak Cliff Presbyterian Church.

Mr. Sprague, who lived at 319 E. Twelth, died here Friday night. He was a native of Filmore County, Minn., where he taught school, operated a general merchandise store and served as postmaster.

Mr. Sprague came to Dallas in 1904 as a traveling salesman. After settling here he owned and operated a warehouse for many years. Prior to his retirement he was a real estate salesman for Industrial Realty.

Mr. Sprague served as city councilman in 1935 and 1937 and served as mayor in 1938 and 1939. Although an active Democrat, he ran for city council twice on the independent ticket.

The former mayor also achieved fame as the father of four college football stars. His oldest son, Mortimer, played at the University of Texas and later was an All-America selection at West Point in 1926 and 1927.

His other three sons, Howard, Charley and John, each served as captain of the Southern Methodist University team as seniors. The Dallas School Board named the Kimball High School Athletic Stadium in honor of the entire Sprague family.

Mr. Sprague was one of the founders of the Dads Clubs of Dallas and was a member of the Oak Cliff Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder for over 45 years. He also taught Sunday School there.

Mrs. Sprague died in 1955.

Mr. Sprague's son John, a hero in the Salerno landing in Italy, was killed in 1943 in World War II.

He is survived by three sons, Mortimer (Bud) Sprague of New York, Howard Sprague of Parker County, and Charles Sprague of New Orlean; two daughters, Mrs. Wilma Stewart of Dallas and Mrs. Natalie Brown of Pampa; two brothers, Ben Sprague of Tyler and Russell Sprague of Crosston, N.D., six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
