Demise of an old and highly respected citizen,
John D Sullivan
At nearly 12 0' clock Saturday nite, an old and respected resident of our village, John D Sullivan joined the silent majority and passed from all earthly pain and sorrow. The funeral took place from St. Joseph Catholic Church at l0 o'clock Monday morning a large number of sympathizing relatives and friends following his remains to their last resting place in the Catholic Cemetery.
Mr. Sullivan was born in Eyeries, County Cork Ireland June 24th, 1823 and was raised a farmer. In 1848 he came to America and located at Providence Rhode Island, remaining there till the spring of 1854 and being there married to Miss Katherine Harrington on April 25th1854. In June of that year the young couple came to New Diggins, Wisconsin, where he followed mining till 1877, when he purchased a farm in Warren Township and moved upon it. They have lived in our village about 3 years, having moved here and rented the farm.
His wife and nine children are left to mourn his loss and one has preceeded him to his eternal home.
The surving children are Mrs. Jas Ultican of Stanly, Wisc. Jerry Sullivan of Lake Mills, Iowa, Mrs Mary Wear and Dan Sullivan of Warren Ill Pat, Maggie, Katie, Nell and Will Sullivan of our city
He also has 2 surviving brothers James, who lives on the old homestead in Ireland and Daniel of Eau Claire, Wisconsin.
Mr. Sullivan was an affectionate father, and exemplary neighbor and a faithful friend. To know him was to respect him. In the entire 71 years of his life he has won the esteem and admiration of all his acquaintances.
For some time he has been a constant sufferer and his death has been looked for at anytime for several weeks past. In his pain he never complained bearing his burden calmly and awaiting the end with composure. John D Sullivan, an old and highly respected citizen of this village, died at family residence in the south ward Saturday nite, Oct. 6 aged 71 years 3 months and 12 days, and was buried in the Catholic cemetery Monday, Oct 8. Funeral services were held at the church. Rev Father Gallagher officiating. The deceased was born in Eyeries, County Cork, Ireland, June 24 1823. Leaving his native country in 1848, he settled at Fall River, Mass. engaging in railroading.
April 25th, 1854, at Providence, R.I., he was united in marriage with Miss Catherine Harrington. The following June the young couple left the East and moved to New Diggings, Wisc. where Mr Sullivan engaged in mining, following that business for many years. He moved to Warren township, purchasing a farm in 1877, where he lived up to the spring of 1892, when he purchased a residence in this village and resided here until he passed away. the deceased for a great many years suffered with rheumatism, and for the past few months was unable to leave his bed. For 22 days previous to his death he could take but very little nourishment. During all the years of suffering he never complained, but with patience waited until death relieved him from all pain. Mr Sullivan was a quiet citizen and a good neighbor. He was a member of the Catholic church of this village and when in good health attended regularly. He did not mix up with the affairs of the township or village, always concentrating all his interest in his family. He was an unassuming man, a faithful husband and father and was greatly respected and loved by all.
By hard work and honest toil he left his family in comfortable circumstances. He leaves a wife and nine grown up children to mourn his departure. One child proceeded the father, dying in April 1873. The following are still living: Mrs Jas. Ultican, Stanley, Wisc., Jerry Sullivan, Lake Mills, Iowa, Mrs Mary Wear, Warren, Patrick, Maggie, Daniel, Kate, Nell and Willliam reside in the village and vicinity. He also leaves 2 brothers, James on the old homestead in Ireland and Daniel who resides at Eau Claire, Wis. The many friends of the family sympathize with them in their sad bereavement.
