Albert William Lunt aka W.W.Lunt

Albert William Lunt went by the name William William Lunt when he enlisted Co.I,Reg.9th Maine 9/21/1861. While they were at Amelia Island Florida 4/7/1862 he says he was sent outside there lines by a superior officer on a improper mission. While on this mission he did not return , or he was taken prisoner by the Confederate Army. He was returned to his regiment 10 days later by Col.Davis of the Confedrate Army. He was charged with desertion and found guilty 5/13/1862. Although he claimed to be innocent. During his trial the witnesses upon testimony he was convicted , he accused them of perjury. On 12/1/1862 he was executed by firing squad at Hilton Head SC. He is buried at Beauford National Cemetery SC. Albert never married or had children..

William's given name was Albert William Lunt. At the time of the Civil War he had been in the Bangor County jail. When he was released he enlisted in the war as William William Lunt. Days before his death he gave a interview and gave his real name in this interview. I have a 5 page copy of this interview.
Albert was a large man for the time being 6ft4 and frame proportionably large and muscular.

When he enlisted he had a rank of Corporal but later was demoted to private.
