The son of Andrew Jackson Miller and Elizabeth Flynn, after the death of her first husband she married an Embly.

He stood 5' 7" tall and had dark hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Franklin County December 8, 1864, as a substitute for William A. Moore, mustered into federal service that day as a private with Co. C, 67th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company July 14, 1865. He gave his enlistment age as 17 years, 10 months and, although technically underage by two months, the army still accepted him.
