Obituary - Knoxville Express, Aug. 1909
This pioneer citizen of Marion county died at Hamilton, Sunday morning, August 1, being 81 years of age. The burial took place Monday at that town. Mr. Spilman came to Marion county 44 years ago and erected the first grist mill built in the county. About seven years ago he moved to Pella and bought property, but after a few years residence there sold his property and moved to a farm near Eddyville. This he sold later and moved to Hamilton, where he died.

Note: His first wife, Sarah P. Teas was born about 1834 in Illinois. They were married 27 Jul 1854 in Mahaska County, Iowa. She was the mother of three children, John T.(1855-1938), Mary Bernice (1857-1960) and Lettie who died in early childhood.
