Samuel was the son of John and Ann (Thompson) Morrison, grandson of Hugh and Martha (McCrillis) Morrison. John was a Capt. in the French and Indian War.
Samuel was born in Colrain, Franklin County, Massachusetts. He participated in Shay's Rebellion and shortly thereafter the Morrison family moved to Hartford and Kingsbury, Washington County, New York. His father, John had a farm in Kingbury. Samuel inherited the farm and was executor of his estate. Samuel's brothers, Capt. Hugh, Capt. John, Jr. and Solomon also lived in Washington County in the town of Hartford.
Samuel probably knew Lurena Patterson in Colerain but she was too young for him to marry. Her uncle, cousins, step-father and mother moved to Hartford, Washington County at about the same time. This is where Samuel and Lurena married and had their children.
Samuel moved to Forestville/Hanover, Chautauqua County between 1819-1822 where he farmed until his untimely death. In the book by Andrew Young, Samuel is called "Robert". It is not known if this was a mistake or if Robert or Samuel was a middle name. All of the sons listed are the same as Samuel and Lurena's sons names.
His grandfather Hugh Morrison was an emigrant along with 2 of his brothers, William and David, from Colrain, Northern Ireland. They sailed with family and friends from Port Rush, Northern Ireland to Boston in 1726, settling in Londonderry for a few years, then moving to Nottingham, then Deerfield, on to Colrain, MA. Hugh's family line is known as the "Nottingham Morrisons". Hugh was listed in English records as a Loyalist. He died before the Revolution. Hugh was a Capt. in the French and Indian War. He built Fort North, also called Morrison near Deerfield.
