Peter was orphaned early in life, his mother died when he was just 8 (1861), and his father just 4 years later (1864) in the Civil War. It looks like the Harry Winchester family took him in, even tho' his father had remarried after his wife's death.
Many in his family moved to Independence, Montgomery Co, KS in the 1870's, and Peter followed around 1878-79. By 1900 he had moved his family to Benton Co, ARK, where he resided to his death.
