Mr. Smith was born on a farm three miles east of Massena on the Grasse River. His father, Adolphus Gustavus, had moved to that farm with his father and uncle, Arad and Paris Smith, when he was but eight years old. His grandfather settled on the farm now known as the Byron Dodge farm.
Gustavus A. Smith grew to manhood on the farm and on September 27, 1870 married Miss Viola D. Dominy of West Chazy. Three children were born, of whom two survive, William L. and Walter O., of Massena. Geneva preceded her father in death. Mrs. Smith died in 1881.
He married Miss Margaret Cowan of Norfolk on February 21, 1883. She died on September 19, 1884.
On September 27, 1887 he married Miss Elizabeth Vass of Dundee, Quebec. Six children were born, of whom four survive, Alfred B. of Gasport, Roy B. Brasher Falls, Miss Elma Smith of Potsdam, and Miss Thelma Smith at home. The two children who died were Allan A. and Elmer. Mrs. Smith, 14 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren survive in addition to the six living children.
