James was a man who could hold the weight of his tongue, knew how to listen carefully, and carried a wit that was dry and sharp. An amazing artist and skilled outdoorsman, James was committed to capturing the beauty and majesty of nature. James was born and raised in Abilene, Texas, studied ceramics and sculpture at Texas Tech University, where he received his bachelor's degree in 1970.
James is survived by four children, Mary Ann Richards and her husband Tom Pryor of Livermore, Calif, Sally (Tyler) Chafee of Denver, Colo, Whitney Laine and Jeremiah Laine of Elliston, Mont; granddaughters Anna Chafee and Nora Chafee; brother Mike (Julie) Richards of Abilene; sister Nancy Richards of Abilene. He was preceded in death by his parents Frank and Virginia Richards.
A memorial for James will be held Sat, July 19, 2008 in the Fun-A-Torium at Fun Valley in South Fork at 2 pm. A service is also planned in Abilene on Saturday, July 26. Anyone wishing to send flowers for the memorial can call The Petaler in Monte Vista; donations in memory of James for a college fund for Whitney and Jeremiah has been set up at the Sunflower Bank, in care of James Richards Memorial Fund c/o Sunflower Bank in South Fork.
