Martin Louis Ebert was born in a log cabin in Davidson County, North Carolina. He was of the Evangelical faith. His parents were Joseph Ebert and Mary Ann Clinard, Clinert,(Kleinert). He had younger siblings, Elizabeth and Joseph. His father died when he was about six years old and his mother remarried William Bodenheimer. There were six half siblings, William, Rebecca, Hiram, Eliza, David and Charles Bodenheimer.

Martin was conscripted in the Confederate Army, 8 Aug 1862, "K" Company, 48th Regiment, N.C. Infantry. He was wounded with a mini-ball in the arm while in Ransom's Division at the Battle of Fredericksburg, VA, on 13 Dec 1862. After released, he married,6 Jul 1865, Amanda Paulina Swaim, daughter of Joseph Spurgeon Swaim and Keziah Emily Idol. They had 3 children, Joseph, Mary Emily and William born in North Carolina. About 1871 this family moved to Oregon, Missouri. Another child Emet was born in 1872 and his wife, Amanda, died in childbirth. Martin remarried Ruth Ann Belville, 20 Jul 1873. They had nine children.
