From the time he was in 5th grade, John Burroughs decided to pursue a career as a surgeon. He attended Brown University and Harvard Medical School, graduating at the age of 24. His medical Residency included John's Hopkins, the Mayo Clinic adn UCLA Medical School with his specialization in Thoracic adn Cardiovascular Surgery.
Military Service sidelined his academic career and in 1953 he was active in Korea with the Navy Reserves as a surgeon, stationed with the First Marine Division along the Seoul Corridor. His professional credits include his role in the development of the Heart-Lung machine, the development and subsequent training of CPR, and the development of both the open heart surgery and the coronary bypass surgery.
He married Laverne Casey in 1966. Their son was born in 1970. When an inherent tremor ended his surgical career in 1976, Dr. Burroughs began a career in Legal Medicine by attending law school at the age of 50. His legal career would last another 20 years. As a medical and legal professional, he produced 100's of published papers, book chapters, lectures and seminars. However, throughout his illustrious and diverse career, he always identified with his years as a pioneer at the forefront of medicine. He was also very proud of his service in Korea during the war.
Dr. Burroughs touched hundreds of lives throughout his life. His wife Laverne died in 2008. He is survived by his son, Brien, nephews, nieces and countless friends and colleagues who were proud to have known him.
