Mary Anthony

Mary Rebecca Anthony, oldest daughter of John R. and Fanny L. Smith Anthony, was born December 19, 1900, near Kanona, Decatur County, and died January 7, 1991, at Republic County Hospital Long Term Care in Belleville at the age of 90 years and 18 days.

Her early childhood was spent in Decatur County, southwest of Oberlin. In 1904 the family came to Republic County, living in and near Wayne. She attended elementary school at Kunkel School, District #73, and high school at Wayne and Agenda. She attended college in Hays, Emporia, Kansas State University in Manhattan, and in San Jose, Calif.

She began teaching in 1919 and retired from teaching in 1965. After her retirement she made her home in Belleville.

She was a member of the United Methodist church (sic) at Talmo, Delta Kappa Gamma, Retired Teachers Association, Charity Rebekah Lodge No. 76.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Ruth Anthony Hughs.

She is survived by one nephew, John K. Hughs of Roswell, N.M.; eight grand and great-grand nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held January 14 at the Bachelor-Faulkner-Dart Memorial Chapel in Belleville, conducted by Rev. Roy Brotton. Interment was in Union Cemetery south of Wayne.
