Colonel Maryus Jones, ex-Confederate, prominent lawyer and public spirited citizen, died suddenly at his home in Newport News, Va., last week.
Funeral services were conducted at his home by Revs. Preston Blake, Patrick Dennison, E. T. Welford and J. K. M. Lee, and the remains taken to Old Abingdon Church, Gloucester County for funeral and interment.
Col Jones was born at "Marlefield," Gloucester County in 1844. He was educated at private schools, St. Stephens Academy, Randolph Macon College and the University of Virginia. He left school in 1862 and joined Co D, 24th Virginia Cavalry. He was taken prisoner at the battle of Cold Harbor and imprisoned until shortly before the close of the war. After peace came he completed his education
and then taught school, being admitted to the bar in 1871. From that time on he engaged in the practice of his profession, being for eight years Commonwealth's Attorney of Gloucester County, and a prominent practitioner all through this circuit. He moved to Newport News in 1899.
Col Jones was a past commander of Virginia Division, United Confederate Veterans, Moderator of the Peninsula Baptist Association and a great churchman. He is survived by his widow and three children.
