MERCED, Calif. - Brig. Gen. Alex W. Talmant, USAF (retired), passed away peacefully at home on Friday, Sept. 5, 2008, joining the love of his life, Dorothy (Urbas), who passed in February 2006.

Born Feb. 8, 1919, in Springfield, Alex graduated from Springfield High School in 1937 and was inducted into its Hall of Fame in 2006. Alex left his pre-medical studies at Saint Louis University to join the Army Air Corps in 1942 and retired in 1970. During his 28 years in the Air Force, Gen. Talmant logged more than 11,000 flying hours and received many decorations, including the Distinguished Service Medal, Distinguished Flying Cross, Legion of Merit and the Purple Heart. After serving as the inspector general of 15th Air Force, wing commander at Larson and Fairchild Air Force Bases in Washington and U-Tapao Air Base in Thailand, Gen. Talmant's final assignment was as the Commander of the 47th Air Division at Castle Air Force Base. Gen. Talmant was proud to have been a member of the team that helped Gen.
