Huger was a Yale graduate and practiced law in Charleston. He was a representative to the secession convention and one of the signer of South Carolina's Ordinance of Secession which occurred on Dec 20, 1860. He served as Captain of the 4th SC Cavalry and concluded the war as a Colonel. Gov. Wade Hampton appointed Rutledge Major General of the State volunteer troops.
