In 1884, Ella's father, Andrew purchased the Solberg Homestead [the property the Lewis Cemetery is located on] from his brother-in-law, Simon Solberg.

Five of Andrew and Gorine's children were born there: Bernard, Mabel, George, Ella, and Elmer Ludwig.

When Ella's older sister Julia contracted tuberculosis sometime before 1910, Ella nursed her until her death, becoming sick with the disease herself in the process. For a time she went to live with her sister, Clara, in Texas hoping that the warmer climate would help her TB, but it did not. Returning back home to her mother's farm, she was taken by Gorine to a specialist in St. Paul, but he also could not help her. She died at the end of January, 1915, and is buried in the cemetery on the Solberg farm beside her father.
