Richard E. Armstrong and his 2 comrades, William Alexander "Bill" Hill and Frank A. Assaro were in the 409th Squadron of the Army Air Force Bomb Group; they were shot down over Rennes, crashing in Montgermont, France on July 9, 1944. The good people of France buried the three American Aviators with all honors, and a Mass was performed at their burial. On July 9, 2004, the town of Montgermont, France held 60th Commemoration Ceremonies for these three aviators who died in the plane crash, and a stone was placed honoring them.
