G.W. 'Hickey' Farris, 88, died on Sept. 6, 2008, at the Worland Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center.

He was born on June 7, 1920, in Eldridge, Ala., to George Wheeler and Martha Etta (Ganey) Farris, where he received his early education.

He served his country in the infantry during WWII. He received the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart during this service. He loved his country and was very proud to serve.

He worked in the coal mines for the next several years starting in Alabama, and later in Rock Springs.

He then started his career as an oilfield driller which took him and his family throughout Wyoming, Montana and Colorado.

He was married to Floy Mae Martin on Nov. 5, 1939, in Double Springs, Ala. To this union were born Terry, Judy and Betty.

The family settled in Gillette, in 1957, moving to Worland in 1967.

He retired from the oil field in 1987. His wife died on May 3, 1991.

He was married to Linda Walker on July 27, 1997, in Worland, where they continued living until the time of his death. Together they enjoyed traveling, gardening and spending time with family.

His hobbies included, fishing, hunting, story-telling and being a practical joker.

He loved making homemade sling shots, watching football and cheering for the winning team and betting candy bars with family.

He was a member of the American Legion Campbell County, Post #42 and the First Southern Baptist Church in Worland.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, two sisters, one grandson, Spencer, and first wife Floy.

He is survived by wife, Linda of Worland; children and their spouses, Terry Farris of St. George, Utah, Judy Lewis of Gillette, Betty Roan of Gillette; brothers, Leonard Farris of Lynn, Ala.; J.D. Farris of Nauvoo, Ala.; George Farris of Lynn; 10 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.


Interment will be at Mount Pisgah Cemetery in Gillette, with military honors provided by the America Legion Post #42.
