He graduated from Cambria High School, then worked as a bookkeeper in Ft. Dodge prior to serving in World War II. He was married to Darlene Abel in 1946. Two children were born to this union, Jo Ann and Linda. Joe spent most of his adult life farming and love to plant huge gardens and all types of fruit trees.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Bert Scales, and a sister, Bernidine Evens.
Joe is survived by his daughters, JoAnn and Linda, his grandson's Rick and Tim, and great-granddaughter, Brandi; a sister, Christine Grove and an aunt, Mildred Castor. Also many nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.
