O'KANE, Jr., John D.
Born 11/9/1923, passed on 9/8/2008. A native of Sacramento and a fourth-generation Californian, whose maternal great-grandfather first came to California in 1838 settling in the Sacramento area in 1849 as a member of the society of California Pioneers. John was a graduate of the Coloma Grammar School, Old Sutter Junior High School and Sacramento High School class of 1942. He was an Army Veteran of World War II European theater and participated in four major battles. He retired from Southern Pacific Railroad as a chief Train Dispatcher after 45 years of service.
In retirement he was a longtime docent at the California State Railroad Museum and a member of the Sutter Roseville Hospital Auxiliary. He was a charter member of the battle of Normandy Association and former member of Post 392 of the American Legion.
John was predeceased by his beloved wife of 53 years, Ruth, his parents, John D. and Cecelia O'Kane and brother Richard (Eleanor). He is survived by his son John III (Mary), daughters Kathleen and Colleen (Mike), as well as grandchildren Phillip, Tracy (Matt), Shawn, Jarrod and Wendy (Matt). He was a great-grandfather to Makenna, Avery, Rikki, Aubrey, Sean and Ethan.
He is also survived by Brothers Robert (Alice), Edward, Mike (Maryann) and Hal (Mary) and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
A mass will be held at St Rose Catholic church in Roseville, CA on the 12th of September at 10am. Interment will follow at Roseville Cemetery along with a reception at the Diamond K Club House in Roseville. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sutter Hospital Auxiliary or a charity of choice.
