Services Held for Clarence Hoopes
funeral services were held Saturday, June 12, 1965 at 2 p.m. in the Fairview Ward LDS Chapel for Clarence Hoopes, 78, who died at 9:30 p.m. June 9, 1965 at the Star Valley LDS Hospital in Afton, after a lengthy illness. Burial was in the Fairview Cemetery.
Clarence Hoopes was born July 14, 1886, at St. David, Ariz., the son of Francis Marion Hoopes, Sr. and Samatha Adaline Kent. He was the second child of a family of seven.
In the spring of 1892, with his family, he moved from Arizona to Montpelier, Idaho. In the spring of 1893 they moved to Raymond, Idaho, and lived there for nine years. While living there, his mother passed away in 1896. In 1901 the family moved to the Big Horn area in Wyoming. Clarence and his brothers drove cattle all the way to Meeteetse, then back to the Green River headwaters. The cattle were sold there later. The family then moved to Logan, Utah, where he attended the Woodruff school that winter.
In 1902 his father shipped belongings to Canada, but they only stayed there a short time. Then his father sent his family back to Idaho on the train, while he, his father, and brother Frank drove back with the team and wagon.
Later that fall the family moved to star Valley. The following year the family moved to Safford Ariz and lived there for two years.
In January 1905, the family started back to Wyoming and arrived in April. Clarence drove a four-horse team and wagon. From that time until he was married he herded sheep, most of the time in the Green River area.
On Oct 12, 1910, he married Ida Luella Richardson in the Logan Temple. They were the parents of six children; Velda Grace, deceased April 13, 1913; Clarence LaVere, Claudia, Byron Eddin, Warren Gilman and Lorna.
in 1915 he bought a ranch west of Fairview that is now owned by his brother, Riley Hoopes, and here he raised his family. During these years he made a living by farming and hauling, freight from Montpelier, Idaho, with horse and wagon or sleigh depending on the season. The roads then were very narrow and poor, and a trip would usually take at least three full days. His wife, Luella, passed away on Oct 6, 1930, and he was left with five children to rear-ranging in age 6 to 17 years.
On Aug 15, 1932, he was married to LaVerna Van Noy Osmond in the Logan Temple, and they combined their families, totaling nine children. The two families now have a total of 59 grandchildren, and 14 great grandchildren. They continued to live on the ranch until the spring of 1945 when they sold the ranch and moved to Ogden, Utah. He worked for the government at the Utah General depot in Ogden until he was retired at the age of 72.
He enjoyed good health until his later years when he had several operations that affected his health seriously. He enjoyed his home, family, and friends, and especially looking forward to returning to Star Valley whenever circumstances or the occasion would permit.
Survivors include his widow; five sons and daughters, Clarence LaVere, Salt Lake City, Utah; Mrs Richard (Claudia_ Roylance, Billings, Mont.; Byron E., Fairview, Wyo.; Warren G., San Pedro, Calif.; and Mrs Carl *Lorna) Henderson, Riverton, Wyo.; 28 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Riley W. and Julian Hoopes, Fairview, Wyo.
