William R. Alford enlisted on October 16, 1861 and he served in Co. D, 1st Florida Cavalry as a Private, 2nd Lieut., and a 1st Lieut. In her application for a Confederate widow's pension, his second wife – Sarah (whom he married in 1869) - stated that Lt. Alford was captured at the Battle of Missionary Ridge (November 23-25, 1863) and thereafter imprisoned, but the War Department records give no indication that he was ever captured or held as a prisoner of war.
