Tony was born in Detroit, MI to Italian immigrants. He and his family returned to his father's home town in Italy about 1926 when he was one year old. He attended school in Italy through the 5th grade - which was the compulsory level of public education in Italy at the time. In 1946, at age 20, Tony returned to the US and moved to the San Francisco Bay area were lived he with brother Frank.

In 1950 he was drafted and served with the US Army in Korea. He was a machinist by profession and a member of the Machinist Union and Aerospace Worker's Union Local No. 1781 of San Mateo. He was also a member of the Italian Catholic Federation.
