Samuel Sears Delaney was the son of William and Mildred "Amelia" Delaney (Delany) of Belmont County, Ohio. He was born February 10, 1831. His father was born in Maryland, his mother, Virginia (census records).

He married Martha Lucinda Roberts on October 23,1853. They continued to live in Belmont County, Ohio where Samuel farmed.

Samuel Sears Delaney served in the Union Army during the War Between the States in Company D of the Ohio 43rd Infantry Regiment having enlisted December 19, 1862. He was promoted to Full Corporal on 31 Dec 1863, and was later promoted to Full Sergeant on May 1, 1865. He mustered out on July 13, 1865 at Louisville, Kentucky. He held the rank of Sergeant at the close of the war.

Eventually, Samuel moved his family south sailing down the Ohio, Kentucky, Mississippi, and Arkansas Rivers. According to family historian, Rosalie Delaney Little, they traveled during our country's centennial year (1876) with several children, ranging in age from early twenties to six years of age, their possessions, and livestock, including two teams of oxen.

They disembarked at Ozark, Arkansas. From there, they traveled approximately 18-20 miles through wilderness to their destination of about four miles southwest of Charleston, Arkansas. The Delaneys built their home on the top of the hill off what would later become the Marietta Road.

Samuel Delaney 79 - father-in-law

Samuel Sears and Martha Roberts Delaney were laid to rest in the Western Star Cemetery in Sebastian County, Arkansas. Their graves were relocated to the Speegle Cemetery in Bloomer, Arkansas, in 1941, when Camp Chaffee was established in the area which included the old Western Star Cemetery.
