The Rev. Robert Nelson Back, 85, of Concord, died Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2008.

Robert was born in Boston on Jan. 7, 1923, the son of the Rev. Percy William Back and Gladys Carrel Back.

Robert married Muriel Anna Cullis on July 7, 1942, and they graduated from Denison University in 1944. Robert attended seminary at Yale, Harvard, and Crozer in Chester, Pa. He was ordained a priest in the Episcopal Church in Philadelphia in 1950. He received an honorary Doctor of Divinity from Berkeley Divinity School at Yale in 1967.

Robert was Rector of St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Glenside, Pa., from 1951 to 1960 where he built the present church and where his ashes will be interred. As Rector of St. Luke's Church in Darien, Conn., from 1960 to 1977, he founded Person-to-Person in 1968, now celebrating forty years of outreach to the disadvantaged. Robert preached on three occasions at St. Paul's Cathedral, London, and at the 900th anniversary of Westminster Abbey, London. In the last 10 years of his active ministry, Robert served as an interim rector for churches in Rhode Island, Connecticut, and Bermuda.

Robert and Muriel enjoyed canoeing, attending elder hostels, and traveling abroad. Robert was known for his spectacular storytelling and his masterful preaching.

Robert is survived by his wife, Muriel Cullis Back; and his four children, Martha Muriel Back Aguiar of Campton, married to James David Aguiar, Ann Louise Back Price of Providence, R.I., married to Lawrence Howard Price, Robert Kenneth Back of Elmwood Park, Ill., married Janet Wisniewski Back, and Timothy Carrel Back of Thurmont, Md., married to Cheryl Darlene Back. Robert and Muriel have nine grandchildren, Gretchen Aguiar, Jessica Mack, Laura Price, Max Price, Katie Back, Karen Back, James Back, Tony Back and Shawn Back; and two great-grandchildren, Seamus Mack and Harriet Mack.
