A resident of Henniker since 1985, he lived in a log cabin he built on property his family has owned since the 1870s.

Bob was the son of Thomas Symonds and Doris Eaton Carr. He spent his formative years growing up in the Deerfield area.

A graduate of Coe-Brown Academy, Class of 1948, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. Selected for Officer Candidate School, Bob successfully completed the requirements in 1959. A "mustang," he rose to the rank of lieutenant commander.

With more than 23 years of service Bob retired and opened his own engineering consulting business, SEACOR-Systems Engineering Associates Corporation. He continued to offer his experience and expertise to the U.S. Navy and a variety of other clients evolving from a converted garage location into one of the nation's fastest growing businesses with more than 700 employees in 15 offices worldwide.

Bob served on the White House Conference on Small Business during the Carter administration. He was a member of the American Society of Naval Engineers. Bob retired from the engineering business in 1983, returning to his native New Hampshire.

He became actively involved in the Henniker community, serving on the zoning and planning boards. He returned to Coe-Brown Academy, serving as a member of the Board of Trustees expanding the services his alma mater provided for the students. He embarked on another business enterprise as a vice president at the Bank of New Hampshire, providing financial assistance to local small businesses throughout the area.

Bob was an avid historian, especially fond of researching family genealogy. He loved his World Champion Boston Red Sox, skiing, fishing and camping, but most of all, his family.

An only child, Bob was predeceased by his wife, Catherine; a daughter, Kathleen; and a grandson, Robert III.

His sons, William, and his wife, Karin, of Henniker and Robert, and his wife, Carole, of Hopkinton, survive him. Grandchildren include Joshua, Alison, Katherine, Courtney and Christopher; as well as three great-grandchildren, Ruby, Rowan and Jacob.
