Pvt. Eli Keller, Co. A, 101st Illinois
Eli Keller was born about 1836 in Stark County, Ohio, the son of Flory Keller and Catherine Elizabeth (Coleman) Keller. About 1841, Eli's parents moved the family to Stark County, Illinois and then about 1850 to Princeville, Illinois in Peoria County. It was there that Eli grew to manhood farming the land beside his father.
Sometime before 1862, and probably before 1860, Eli moved to Morgan County, Illinois where he resided at Meredosia, Illinois. There he was making his living as a Wagonmaker. On August 6, 1862, Eli volunteered for service in a company which was being raised in Meredosia for service in the Union Army. Upon getting approximately 100 volunteers the men of this company went to Jacksonville, Illinois where they went into camp at Camp Duncan. On September 2, 1862, the men of this company were mustered into service as Co. A of the 101st Regiment of Illinois Volunteer Infantry.
For just over a year, Eli served faithfully in Co. A of the 101st. In Oct. of 1863, the men of the 101st were taking part in the Campaign for Chattanooga. For weeks the Union Armies camped below Lookout Mountain endured shelling from the Confederate troops on Lookout Mountain. Sometime in November of 1863, Eli was badly wounded during one of those shellings. Eli died in a Field Hospital in Lookout Valley, Tennessee on Nov. 21, 1863. His body was initially buried somewhere near Lookout Mountain and after the war was exhumed and buried in Grave #854 in Section B of the Chattanooga National Cemetery in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
