Orphaned at 13, he lived with James Runkle, a tanner (poss uncle?). About 10 years after he married (1864), he moved to Industry, Mc Donough county, IL., where he owned a drugstore. In 1891 they moved to Tulare, CA (Daughter Ella and son-inlaw Dr. George G. Shannon had moved to Tulare 4 years earlier, in 1887) where he was a fruit grower until 1904, when he moved to Tulare City, CA. (From Shannon Family History)

Ella Florence (b 1854), Romanus Hess (b 1857), Orra Verandus (b 1860), Albert (b 1863), Alice (b 1863), and Frank (b 1867).

Ella married Dr George Gordon Shannon in Illinois, and they moved to Tulare, California shortly after for his health. I.N. and Ruannah moved to Tulare in 1891, shortly before Ella died.
