John was the son of Solomon and Nancy Fillingame Bounds. He served in the Civil War, CSA, Pvt., Co. K, 37th MS Infantry. He married the former Elizabeth Mason on April 22, 1858 in Harrison Co., MS. They had thirteen children. All are linked except John, Ella and Sarah.

John Clark Bounds and his family lived in the old home place in Harrison County, MS. They moved near Purvis, MS and settled on Black Creek. His son, Ephriam Bounds, lived there until his death in 1962. The Bounds family cemetery, where most of John's children are buried, is situated close by.
