A loving, caring and hardworking husband, grandfather and friend, "Gus" April was a life-long, die-hard fan of both the Boston Bruins and Red Sox as well as a frequent guest at the local Greyhound park, enjoying Saturday matinées.
Mr. April began working full-time at an extremely young age, as was very common for young men of his generation. Upon settling in Amesbury, he spent several years working in the hat and shoe factories based near and along the Merimack River. These factories, now historical sites, were very "popular" places of employment in the first half of the 20th century and were vital in sustaining the the families of the people who worked at them- as well as the local economy.
Gus couldn't stand how retirement left him with so much time on his hands, so he spent afternoons and weekends working part-time his son Ron's printing company. In addition to keeping busy that way, he also got to spend tons of time working on his tomato and cucumber gardens, which always produced the ripest, plumpest, and best damn tomatoes I've ever seen.
Most importantly, aside from all the things he did in his life, Gus April, my grandfather, was my best friend. I learned more from him about life, sports, history...and countless other topics...than I ever have or could learn from the most expensive education in the world. I miss him everyday.
I love you- we all love you, Gramp. Wish you could have been here to see the Sox win it!
