Son of Harold Joseph Souther and Alta Myrtle Braley. Husband of Mary Elizabeth Deragon.

Hartley was born in Bristol July 7, 1932. He attended school in Bristol and graduated from UNH with a degree in business administration.

He worked in his father's grocery store, Bristol Cash Market, during his high school and college years.

He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1955, serving with the 3550th Combat Crew Training Wing as information officer in Valdosta, Ga.

He and his family returned to Concord, where he became a member of the Air National Guard in Manchester, serving for six years with the 157th Air Transport Group as purchasing officer.

He attained the rank of captain and was called to active duty in 1961.

After his tour of duty, he worked with his father in Souther's Market.

He served as president of the N.H. Retail Grocers and received their Grocer of the Year award in 1986.

He was also active in the Concord Chamber of Commerce on the board of directors, the United Way board of governors in 1980, Associated Grocers board of directors, and the Small Business Administration.

He was active in the First Congregational Church, Union Lodge 79 of the Masons and Eastern Star Epiphany chapter 50 for many years.

He loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman.

Family members include his wife, Mary (Deragon) Souther of Concord; three sons, Peter Souther of Kittery, Maine, Charles Souther of Concord, and Michael Souther of Loudon; one sister, Audrey Desroches; cousins, nieces and nephews.

IN HIS LIFE: Family members also include daughters-in-law, Robin Souther of Kittery, Maine, Diane Souther of Concord, and Arlene Souther of Loudon; six grandchildren, Pearson, Alexandra, Erin, Colleen, Kevin, and Kaitlin; sister-in-law, Claire Cross; and brother-in-law, Albert Cross.
