Archbishop Schrembs was the son of George and Mary (Gess) Schrembs. He was ordained to the priesthood 29 Jun 1889 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He was ordained a Bishop 8 Jan 1911 in Grand Rapids, Michigan as an Auxillary Bishop and Titular Bishop of Sophene. On 11 Aug 1911 he was appointed Bishop of Toledo, Ohio. On 16 Jun 1921 he was appointed Bishop of Cleveland, Ohio serving as the Bishop of the Diocese of Cleveland from 1921 to 1945. On 25 Mar 1939 he was appointed Archbishop of Cleveland, Ohio (personal title). He was a priest for 56 years and a bishop for 35 years.
