Ruth Browder Bates, 95, of Lufkin, was born June 24, 1913, in Truscott, Texas, the daughter of Saphronia (Isbell) and William. E. Browder. She passed away Saturday, September 20, 2008, in a local hospital.
Mrs. Bates was a homemaker, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She attended Texas Tech University and was a member of the Methodist church for many years, where she was active in the Women's Society of Christian Service, rising to district office. Since moving to Lufkin in the early 1980s she has been a member of Denman Avenue Baptist Church.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, David and Kathy Bates of Lufkin; grandchildren, Andrew Bates and Susan Gebhard of Austin, Allison and Roger Neil Moss of Lufkin and Tracy and Arnold Vargas of Nacogdoches; great-grandchildren, Alex Vargas of Tyler, Anthony, Avery, Addyson and Amelia Vargas of Nacogdoches; sister-in-law, Sarah T. Bates of Pasadena, CA; great-nieces, Beverly and husband Thom Staten of Pearland, Darita Bullock of Pearland and James Coleman and wife Tracy of Houston; special care-givers, Linda McElwee and Christy Stewart, both of Lufkin. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Bates was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, William F. Bates; five brothers; and three sisters.
Pallbearers will be Andrew Bates, Roger Neil Moss, Arnold Vargas, Thom Staten, James Coleman, and Eddie Carl Browder.
Services for Mrs. Bates will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 23, 2008, in the Elwyn M. Gipson Memorial Chapel in the Garden of Memories Memorial Park, with Dr. Charles M. Roberts officiating. Interment will follow in the Garden of Memories Memorial Park. Friends are invited to visit with the family from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday evening at Gipson Funeral Home.
