He was the son of Lieutenant General Thomas B. Larkin and Mary Irwin Larkin.
On Saturday afternoon, October 8, 1949,he married Jeanne Gaines Outlaw at the Base Chapel at Tyndall Air Force Base in Panama City, Florida.
She was the daughter of Mrs. Lucy duVal Outlaw of Asheville, North Carolina and Richard Harding Outlaw of Goldsboro, North Carolina.
They had no children.
He died when his F-84 jet fighter plane crashed near Langley Air Force Base in Virginia while on a flight to Turner Air Force Base in Georgia. The Larkin Conference Center located Fort Lee, Virginia is named after him.
