Betty Ferris, known throughout Concord for more than 60 years as a highly involved member of the community (along with her late husband, Harry), went to be with the Lord on Saturday, Sept. 20, 2008.

Born Elizabeth Maverette Kirkland on May 7, 1919, in St. Johnsbury, Vt., to Hugh Maxwell Kirkland and Dorcas Pearl Ayre. She graduated from Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, attended Nasson College for one year, and then graduated from the University of New Hampshire, Class of 1941, with a bachelor's in home economics.

She met Harry at a UNH dance and became engaged two years later. Betty and Harry were married in 1942, and came to Concord in 1945.

Their associations were numerous, as were their friends. Together they sang, danced, acted in musicals, partied, played golf, traveled the world, served their church and community, and were happily married for 51 years. Family and friends rejoice that they are together again.

Betty and Harry were members of Wesley United Methodist Church, and sang in the church choir for many years. Betty served in numerous capacities there and was the first woman to serve as a trustee in that church. In 2006, she was honored with the Faithful Discipleship award.

She became involved in community work even as a young mother. She has always had a heart for mentoring and began by volunteering to teach home economics to girls at the Friendly Club. Later, as a member of the Concord Women's Club, she became a Jr. Women's Club adviser and served in that capacity for several years. Betty's other associations were UNH Alumni Association, Stratford Club, Pierce Brigade, Concord Hospital Associates, Havenwood Heritage Heights Auxiliary, Interfaith Caregivers, Concord Music Club, Concord Community Players and she was a charter member of the Concord Chorale.

She is survived by her son, Kirkland Ferris of Detroit; her daughter, Gail McFarland of Granada Hills, Calif.; and three grandchildren, Jonathan Ferris, Kristen Ferris and Eryn Burroughs.

The family would love to receive notes of remembrance about Betty to enrich their own memories of her. Please send to Gail McFarland, 16830 Kingsbury St. No. 350, Granada Hills, Calif. 91344 or e-mail to [email protected].

Memorial services will be held Saturday at 7 p.m. at Wesley United Methodist Church, 79 Clinton St., Concord.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Wesley United Methodist Church Endowment Fund, for the Ferris Music Endowment Fund.
