Norma Lee Scranton, age 72, went home to the Lord on September 17, 2008.

This loving wife, devoted mother and terrific grandmother will be greatly missed by all. She died at the ranch south of Thedford.

Norma Lee was born October 31, 1935, in Many, Louisiana to Charles Luther and Eva Mae Maines Hillman. She attended grade school and graduated from the DeRidder, LA school system. After graduation, she attended Northwestern State College in Natchitoches, LA to pursue a degree in nursing. On November 27, 1955, she was united in marriage with Harvey William "Bill" Scranton in DeRidder, LA.

It is rumored that Norma Lee met Bill during a ping pong tournament while he was stationed in Camp Polk, LA. Unto this union three children were born: Deborah Lynn, Stuart Lee, and Edward Elvin. This "Southern Bell" came to the Sandhills of Nebraska to work side-by-side with her husband to build the family cattle ranch south of Thedford. Norma Lee's devotion to her family, friends and community was reflected in countless ways. She was masterful in the hayfield on a tractor; as well as, producing the best "picnic" lunches a hay crew could imagine. NormaLee loved to cook, her cookbook collection is a testament of her excellent skills in the kitchen. She served as an esteemed test cook for Betty Crocker Kitchen's in Minneapolis, MN.

Norma Lee enjoyed honing her green thumb in her flower beds, vegetable garden and dragging those water hoses all over her yard. She worked many Tuesdays over the years for the Thedford Sale Barn, sang in the United Church of Christ choir on Sundays, attended countless athletic and academic events "in at the school," and worked six years as the Thomas County Treasurer. She enjoyed traveling and the adventure of seeing new parts of this great country of ours.

Norma Lee was an avid bridge player belonging to two clubs. Fall Saturdays were reserved for BIG RED HUSKER football, whether listening to the radio, watching TV, or attending the games in person. NormaLee was an active member of Thedford's OES, American Legion Auxiliary, Historical Society and women's fellowship.

Norma Lee is survived by her daughter Deborah Scranton, Minneapolis, MN; sons, Stuart & Melissa Scranton, Thedford, NE; Edward & Deborah Scranton, Thedford, NE; grandchildren, Lacey & David Shaw, Charlene and Diann Scranton, Shaylee and Seth Scranton, and Paul, Thomas and Nicholas Lovrien; sisters, Rhoda & Chuck Dickens, Dripping Springs, TX, Loyal & Haskell Davis, Jefferson, Texas, and Judith Moline, Dripping Springs, TX; mother-in-law, Irene Scranton, Mullen, NE; sisters-in-law, Janet & Tom Howell, Valentine, NE, Jean & Ron Edelman, Florence, OR, and Ernestine Hillman, DeRidder, LA, brother-in-law, Dude & Bonnie Scranton, Buffalo, WY; and lots of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her caring and faithful husband of 42 years; her parents; her brothers, Vernon and A.L.; one grandson, Derrick Dowse and two brothers-in-law, Clark Moline and Lee White.

Family requests memorials be given to the Thedford American Legion, Thedford United Church of Christ or the donor's choice.

Services were held Sunday, September 21, 2008 at 3:00 P.M. CDT at the United Church of Christ, Thedford. The Rev. Linda Martin officiatied. Burial followed in Hillcrest Cemetery, Thedford. Mullen Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
