Born to Oliver Ashenhurst (1793-1859) and Euphemia Bishop (1803-1884), James was one of 10 children of the Ashenhurst family. James D. Ashenhurst of Brown Cty. Ohio enlisted at age 20 on the 24th day of January 1862 at Leavenworth, Kansas in the U.S. Army for a period of three years. His enlistment was with the 2nd Regiment of Kansas Volunteers. His enlistment paper reveals he was 5'-10" in height, had grey eyes and light brown hair. A second record shows that he served in the 8th Regiment of Kansas Volunteer Infantry, Company H.
